Cary Easterly / Lessons

Wanna be a rock star? Just ask Emily’s mother. Cary’s years of shuttling daughter Emily to guitar lessons paid off in spades. Last year, the rising-rocker inspired her mom to open her Grove Avenue music shop, Key Signatures. Now the joint is jumpin’ with students taking guitar, drums, viola, violin, clarinet, piano, flute, banjo—even voice lessons. A stylish lounge invites parents to linger. “It’s a comfortable space where little kids can roll around, knock over guitars and have a big time,” says Cary. She hatched the business on a tip: both the shop and a longtime music-store manager were available. “Remember Don Warner Music on Libbie? Since they moved, nothing had replaced it.” With her top-notch faculty, Cary’s adding Rock Star Camp this summer and hopes to offer cello lessons soon. “Richmond’s full of talent,” she says excitedly. “And with places like The National opening, it’ll jump start a lot of children’s imaginations.”
