He's So Original | Will Clarke Wants To Change Your Plates

One year after his wife Eva was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, Will decided Virginia needed a new license plate. “I wanted to destigmatize diabetes and raise awareness.” Delegate John O’Bannon, MD, sponsored a bill granting Will two years to design, approve, and pre-sell 350 tags. “Virginia has a half-million diabetics; I thought how hard could it be?” Answer: very. “Many people are still in the closet. Diabetes isn’t a scarlet letter.” With the deadline looming and 100 plates to sell, Will and Eva dogged everyone they knew. “Falling short would send us back to square one.” Three months later, seeing cars bearing the plates was “awesome.” To date, Virginia’s 1,300 Drive out Diabetes plates have raised $5,010 for in-state research. “People stop me about it,” Will says. “They want to help find a cure.”
