There’s a dance I do in the kitchen when I’ve had a particularly amazing thing happen and I have to release the happy. It’s my own little personal dance; twirling is involved, as are clapping, tapping, and other details that I’ll spare you from here. It’s a beautiful thing... in my kitchen.
Last Saturday, Angie and I were in a local bookstore. She called me to come see something, and there on a big table under a big sign was our Halstead book - My Boss Sucks: A Story Book and Survival Guide. It was center stage, next to business classics like Who Moved My Cheese and above Freakanomics, Drucker, and Good to Great. For me, that was a kitchen-dance moment, except that I wasn’t in the kitchen, and nothing about my surroundings was personal. I think, in the blur of that moment, I restrained as much of the kitchen-dance as I could. I think, in that moment, I displayed the very most humility and gratitude that one could expect, and I merely clapped and executed the slightest of a tap-dance shuffle. It took all the control I had, and then some.
Almost a week later, I’m still basking in the glow of my kitchen-dance moment in the bookstore. I don’t how many books have sold, but I know a new personal level of delight, and for that I am truly grateful.

I don't have a kitchen dance, I have a car dance. And recently my boyfriend's brother-in-law caught me driving down the street while doing it. Busted!

That is so cool! Congrats! I have a happy food dance (well it is a seated dance, more of a butt wiggle), does it count?

Those kind of dances are so good for the soul and for everyone who loves you. Ladies who have babies do that sort of dance, too, don't you think? 'Specially as they watch those babies dance so joyously. Won't be long and you'll be Dancin' with the Stars.... or maybe you are already!

I never do my happy dance in public. I would be mortified if it made it on to You Tube. I don't know when or where it originated but I am just glad I get to do it. I probably do it rarely enough that I don't remember the previous one but often enough to not care that I can't remember. Long Live the Happy Dance!!!!

...although my happy dance is more of a fist pumping exercise a la Tiger Woods or Brett Favre. Regardless, I think the internal acceptance of one'e own success for those who are highly successful and humble is invaluable. Too many times we are driving so hard that we forget it's a journey with happy dance moments along the way. Thanks for sharing your journey Anne as we lok forward to seeing your Happy Dance migrate out of the kitchen and onto the Oprah Show!

Ahh, the kitchen dance. Akin, I believe to when I sing in the shower - a celebratory means to which I'd subject no one. But isn't it delighful that we all have our unique customs to acknowledge happy life moments?! Glad to learn your book has made it to the big time shelves and even happier that you are, rightfully, glowing at the outcome. Dance away, AB!

Oprah has a long history of happy dance moments...just avoid the furniture (i.e. Tom Cruise). Everyone should practice random outburts of joyful dancing. For those out of practice head over to your favorite toy store and take a refresher course from the masters of the happy dance - joyful children! Congrats Anne and Enjoy!!!
