Role Call

Tuesday, November, 4, 2008

I voted today, and while this in and of itself is cause for celebration, I was completely undone by the computer printout that verified my eligibility.  The name below mine on that all-powerful list belongs to my son.  He voted last week – absentee because he’s away at school, and there was his full name, just the way it is on his birth certificate and drivers license, announcing his eligibility to participate in this sacred practice.  Today, for the first and perhaps only time in my life, I shared a physical place in the democratic process with my son.

There are lots of moments in the life of a parent that move us, that stand us in awe of the responsibility and the possibility of what our children can become.  Today, my son and I served our country in the best way that we could, and today, and today I got a little validation that just maybe I was a good enough mom.
