Carolyn Purcell | Cake

Carolyn didn’t recognize the gentleman buying her poundcake at the Quirk Gallery Farmer’s Market, but Jim Ukrop knew he’d tasted something special.  “He told me to call Joe’s Market and ask for the manager,” she says.  Made with real butter, eggs, and “nothing hydrogenated,” her Simply Delicious poundcake slices, brownies, and pies debuted at the Libbie Avenue store last month.  A self-taught baker, Carolyn, “grew up thinking cakes and pies came from the Westhampton Pastry.” She developed her recipes during a two-year stint in  Colorado Springs with her miliary husband.  “I’d ship cakes home for my mother and sister to taste.”  Back in Richmond, Carolyn certified her kitchen and sold her scratch baked goods at local farmers’ markets and by special-order.  With Thanksgiving pie season in full swing, Carolyn’s stand-mixers are whirring constantly.  Her pumpkin, sweet potato, and pecan pies are available by special order at Joe’s.

We had a slice of the Lemon Pound Cake today and, oh wow, it's the real deal. One bite and you know it's homemade from scratch and there's "nothing hydrogenated" about it. The two-slice servings sold at the Joe's checkout are just right for sharing.
